HDPE

HDPE is a tough, low-cost semi-crystalline polyethylene with a top corrosion rating and exceptional ductility, shown by its 600 percent elongation. At 0.95 g/cm3 it is light and impact-resistant with 30 MPa tensile strength. Inexpensive and chemically inert, it is a workhorse for tanks, cutting boards, wear parts, and tough fabricated components.

How HDPE machines

HDPE machines at 4.0/5 but, being soft and slippery, it needs sharp tools and high speeds to shear cleanly rather than smear. It deflects under clamping and cutting load and relaxes afterward, so tight tolerances are hard to hold. Plan for some spring-back and avoid heavy clamping that distorts thin sections.

Manufacturing & processing

HDPE is CNC machined from sheet and rod and injection molded for volume parts. It heat- and hot-gas welds well for tanks and liners but resists adhesives without surface treatment. Its low-friction, non-stick surface and chemical inertness make bonding unreliable, so welding or mechanical fastening is preferred for assemblies.

Typical applications

HDPE is used for chemical tanks, cutting boards, chute and hopper liners, wear strips, marine fittings, and tough impact-resistant parts. Its inertness suits food-contact and chemical service, while its toughness and low friction fit guides and slides. A common low-cost choice for fabricated, weldable industrial components.

When to choose it

Choose HDPE for low-cost toughness, impact resistance, and chemical inertness, especially in tanks, liners, and wear parts. For higher-temperature or stiffer service, choose PP or acetal; for extreme abrasion, step up to UHMW. Avoid HDPE where tight tolerances or adhesive bonding are needed. It wins on toughness, chemistry, and price.

Why does machined HDPE not hold tight tolerances?
HDPE is soft and deflects under cutting and clamping forces, then relaxes and springs back after machining. Its semi-crystalline structure also moves with temperature. These effects make precision difficult, so HDPE suits parts with generous tolerances rather than close-fit precision components requiring micron-level accuracy.
Is HDPE food-safe for cutting boards?
HDPE is widely used for cutting boards and food-contact parts because it is chemically inert, non-absorbent, and available in food-grade certified stock. Confirm the specific sheet is certified for food contact. Its toughness and easy machining make it the standard material for commercial cutting surfaces.
HDPE or UHMW for a wear liner?
Both are polyethylenes with low friction. UHMW has far higher molecular weight, giving better abrasion and impact resistance and lower friction, ideal for demanding chute liners and wear pads. HDPE is cheaper and stiffer. Choose UHMW for severe wear, HDPE for general-purpose, cost-sensitive liners.
