PCTFE (Kel-F)
PCTFE, known as Kel-F, is a fluoropolymer rated to 150C prized for the lowest gas and moisture permeability of any plastic and excellent dimensional stability. With 130% elongation and full chemical resistance it serves cryogenic seals and valve seats, but at top-tier cost (5/5) reserved for parts where those properties are non-negotiable.
How PCTFE (Kel-F) machines
Rated 4.0/5 — PCTFE machines well with sharp standard tooling, holding tight tolerances thanks to its dimensional stability and low creep. It is softer than filled plastics so no abrasive tool wear, but its cost means scrap is expensive; take light finishing passes and verify dimensions carefully on critical seal geometries.
Manufacturing & processing
Available via CNC and injection molding. Most precision seal and valve-seat work is machined from compression-molded stock to guarantee dimensional control. The combination of low creep and tight machinability lets it hold sealing surfaces that stay accurate from cryogenic temperatures up to its service limit.
Typical applications
Best for cryogenic seals and valve seats, plus barrier components for liquid oxygen, gas systems, and aerospace where minimal permeability is critical. It is used where a seal must stay leak-tight and dimensionally stable across extreme temperature swings that would embrittle or shift lesser materials.
When to choose it
Choose PCTFE when low gas permeability and cryogenic dimensional stability justify its high cost — oxygen service, gas barriers, and cryo seals. Choose PTFE or PVDF instead for general chemical service at far lower cost. Avoid PCTFE where its premium price buys no advantage over cheaper fluoropolymers.
